This weekend begins on Friday 2nd June evening with an Icebreaker Reception (1800-2000hrs) at the Burngate Centre and will include introductory talks. Paul Hyland will lead a session on Saturday morning (1000-1200hrs) discussing his poetic response to the Purbeck Landscape. Sarah Action will set the scene for a writing walk with a series of provocations and prompts (1200-1400hrs). On Saturday afternoon Patrick Corbett will lead a walk (1400-1700hrs) across the Inland Purbeck Stone Plateau down to the Cliff Stone Quarries. The day will end up at the famed Square and Compass (1800-2100hrs) where the group will reflect and discuss their experiences and their own responses to the geology, landscape and stone – worked and unworked. On Sunday 4th June (1000-1300hrs) a walk to the old workings in the magical Wilkswood will give a very different perspective on the Isle of Purbeck.\nWe will be working indoors and outdoors in nature, walking, chatting and sharing reflections growing ideas, and generating new poetry, journalling and writing. The writing sessions will take place on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. A sharing on Sunday afternoon (1400-1600hrs) allows for reflection, feedback and meetings of mindscapes.\nBring snacks and a blanket or cushion to sit on outside and please dress for the weather. We will spend time outdoors where possible, subject to weather.\nThe course is run in conjunction with the Scottish Centre for Geopoetics (https://www.geopoetics.org.uk/ ) an organisation with members across the UK (and worldwide) promoting the creative expression of the Earth.\nWhat will I achieve?\nTwo days of Geopoetry learning, interactive conversation, writing together, sharing work and maybe even new friendships or collaborations.\nWhat level is the course and do I need any particular skills?\nSuitable for writers working at all levels.\nHow will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?\nAs above, time outdoors subject to weather.\nAre there any other costs? Is there anything I need to prepare in advance or bring?\nBring clothing suitable for mild and light weather, pen and paper…feel free to bring a cushion and blanket. If you’ve already completed at least one Have A Go course at Burngate, you’re welcome to join this evening class session which runs weekly throughout the autumn. Working at your own pace you’ll be working alongside other people who share your interest in carving, and with an experienced tutor for technical and creative support.\nWhat will I achieve?\nThe course allows your own choice of project. Students will otherwise be set a flower panel carving as this covers many techniques you use for most other carvings.\nWhat level is the course and do I need any particular skills?\nA previous Have A Go session is helpful though not essential.\nHow will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?\nThese sessions will be entirely practical, working at the banker with mostly direct drawing. Please bring designs to adapt. Everyone will work at their own pace, so you’re welcome to continue carving between sessions or just within the sessions themselves.\n

A simple shape or motif is drawn onto a piece of stone, which is then carved in relief. The longer session allows for a larger carving and slightly more complex design than is possible in the ‘Have a Go’ sessions.\nThis one day workshop is a great introduction to the craft of stone carving. Learn to make a relief carving around 20 x 20cm (8 x 8 inch) in Portland stone. Bring your own design or work from our reference materials. You can expect a good balance of theory and practical skills, as well as the support and advice of a master craftsman.\nYou could also book several of these sessions to create a larger project: please ask for details.\nPlease note that this course does not cover letter cutting.\nWhat will I achieve?\nYou will learn the techniques of carving a relief onto stone and removing the unwanted background material. You will learn how to use the tools utilised in stone carving, providing a basic understanding of this heritage skill. During the day you will create a relief carving on a 20 x 20cm (8 x 8 inch) Portland stone tablet. (We use Portland stone for our shorter courses as it is softer than Purbeck stone.)\nWhat level is the course and do I need any particular skills?\nThis course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those who have previously attended a two-hour ‘have a go session’ and who want to create a more detailed or deeper relief carving. It’s also a welcoming space for those who wish to continue practising their skills in a supportive environment with a tutor on-hand for guidance .\nYou do not need any particular skills, simply the ability to hold tools in both hands- a chisel in one, and a dummy (stonemason’s hammer) in the other. Stonecarving is easiest done standing up but a stool can be provided for anyone who would find this tiring.\nHow will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?\nThis is a tutor-led, practical, hands-on class, with a supportive atmosphere. It’s also great fun with a rewarding conclusion as you get to take your own relief carving away with you. All work is completed in our purpose-built on-site workshops.\nAre there any other costs? Is there anything I need to prepare in advance or bring?\nStone, tools, and safety equipment will be provided. Please wear old clothes and stout shoes which cover your toes and protect your feet. You don’t need to prepare anything in advance. The course fee includes complimentary teas, coffees and biscuits – please bring a packed lunch with you.\n \n
