This is a three hour introductory workshop into the art of lettering and engraving, where you will be able to engrave a letter, number or an organic shape on Purbeck stone.
During the session you will learn how to lay out lettering or organic shape on the stone, where no drawing skills are necessary. You will be shown how to hold and use the tools correctly to make controlled incisions into the stone where a level of concentration and coordination is required.
Suitable designs and templates will be provided, although you are most welcome to bring your own ideas and designs to discuss with the tutor. The workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those wanting to develop their stone carving skills.
Alan Davis has lived in Dorset from birth and has worked with stone straight from school, attending weymouth College to study the art of stone masonry and letter cutting. He has worked in numerous quarries and had the privilege of working alongside many experienced local stone masons through his early years.
Alan has a deep love of nature and enjoys spending much of his free time exploring the wonderful Dorset countryside, observing the unique local geology. He is also a keen bird watcher and this is evident in his carvings and sculptures.
