Abstract Sculpture Inspired by our Earth
Three-Day Course
Create an abstract sculpture using our Earth – above and below ground – as your inspiration.
For this course we will be using Maltese limestone, which is much softer than Purbeck stone, giving beginners a chance to complete a sculpture in just 3 days.
You’ll use hand tools to carve an abstract three dimensional design with curving forms and interesting textures. Geology, caves, arches, openings and fossils will provide inspiration, as well as the sculptures of Barbara Hepworth and local artists Sophie Orde MccGwire and Benji Lowsley-WIlliams.
This course is supported by Arts Council England and offered at a special discounted rate as part of Burngate’s ‘Of Quarries and Stone’ project devised with writer Sarah Acton
You are welcome to bring your own reference images or design sketches for a piece of stone 25 x 15 x 12.5cm (10 x 6 x 5 inches). Your tutor will discuss the suitability of these and help you ensure they are practical for carving. This is not essential though – prepared patterns and photos will be available for anyone who needs some inspiration.
Please note this course does not include letter cutting.
