Stone-Carving in 3 Dimensions
Three-Day Course
Create a sculpture in the round using nature as your inspiration, working over three days. For this course we will be using Maltese limestone, which is much softer than Purbeck stone, giving beginners a chance to complete a sculpture in just 3 days.
You’ll use hand tools to carve a 3-dimensional design of an animal, bird or nature-inspired abstract with curving forms and interesting textures.
You are welcome to bring your own nature images or design sketches for a piece of stone 25 x 15 x 12.5cm (10 x 6 x 5 inches). Your tutor will discuss the suitability of these and help you ensure they are practical for carving. Alternatively, we will also have prepared patterns and photos for anyone who needs some inspiration.
Please note this course does not include letter cutting.

What will I achieve?
- You will create your own 3-dimensional stone-carving in Maltese Limestone, using nature as your inspiration.
- You will gain confidence and enhance your stone carving skills using a range of hand tools.

This is a practical, hands-on class with a supportive, friendly atmosphere, suitable for beginners with an interst in art, or anyone who enjoys workiong with their hands, as well as people with some experience of stone-carving.
You do not need any particular skills, simply the ability to hold tools in both hands – a chisel in one and a dummy (stonemason’s hammer) in the other.
How will I be taught?
Carving is done standing up, but a perching stool can be provided for anyone who would find this difficult.
Topics will include :
- creating a design suitable for carving and making paper templates,
- creating s small clay model for reference,
- using a pitching tool to clear away waste,
- roughing out the form with a point,
- refining shapes with a claw tool,
- using a riffler to smooth your design and add detail,
- tips for setting up a workspace at home.
Is there anything I need to prepare in advance or bring?
Stone, tools, and safety equipment will be provided.
Please wear old clothes and stout shoes or boots which cover your toes and protect your feet.
You are welcome to bring along nature images of design sketches for a piece of stone 25 x 15 x 12.5cm (10 x 6 x 5 inches) , alternatively prepared patterns and photos will be available for anyone who needs further inspiration.
