Anna Bowen
Lettering Design | Carving
Anna Bowen is a lettering designer from Dorset. After attending Weymouth college for the fundaments of stonemasonry and carving, she took up an apprenticeship with master brush letter-carver Nick Benson in USA. Anna is a qualified teacher and her first post was lettering tutor for the HND program at Weymouth College. 20 years on in teaching from her own studio, she works to commission in lettering stone, wood and glass.
On occasion Anna has enjoyed working with others on large projects; the Reading Room at the British Museum, and the Animals in War Memorial, Hyde Park.
Locally, her work can be seen at Wareham on street benches, as well in collaboration with Paul Hyland on the six stones Purbeck writers project on the South West Coastal Path at St. Aldhelms Head.
Most commonly Anna creates lettered garden items and also memorial stone benches, working in collaboration with Burngate and National Trust.
Anna teaches regularly at Burngate. Last year she led a course in carving mythical beasts, as well as an evening programme called Continuing in Stone. Anna’s most recent course explores expressive mark making on paper and stone with unconventional and experimental tools and methods.
In her spare time, Anna plays cello with the Dorset Chamber Orchestra and is a keen Argentine tango dancer.
