Quarry To Castle Trail
Join us for the inaugural walk of the Quarry to Castle Trail !
This trail connects the current South West Coast Path – through quarries past and present – to Corfe Castle.
The route has been chosen in discussion with the National Trust to provide greater understanding, engagement and enjoyment within our community and across the stone industry.
The walking trail links various routes that the stone might have been carried from the Purbeck quarries to the most significant building in Purbeck that is built in Purbeck Stone: Corfe Castle.

What will I achieve?
As well as the frsh air and the inspiring Purbeck scenery?
Burngate’s interest in enabling this walking route for the community lies in its aspiration to inform on all aspects of Purbeck Stone and to take advantage of its physical location at the heart of the activity.
We hope that you this guided walk gives you an appreciation of the quarrying and geology within the local Purbeck landscape around Burngate, with all paths leading to Corfe Castle!
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This walk is pitched at a totally introductory level, though it will also be suitable for those with some prior knowledge.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The walk has been split into two sections:
- We’ll start at Burngate and go on a guided walk around the local area of Acton down to Dancing Ledge .
- We’ll start at Burngate and follow the trail skirting around the old quarry workings to Corfe Castle
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to prepare in advance or bring?
No additional costs.
Bring sensible clothing and robust footwear, suitable for walking in typical British weather conditions! You may wish to bring a drink and light snacks to eat en-route.
Paths can be muddy and uneven. There will be stiles to cross. We’ll take it at a gentle pace.
1st Section – Burngate to Dancing Ledge LOOP – approx 4 miles / 6.5km
The terrain is mainly gently undulating, however there is a steep uphill climb out of Dancing Ledge to the top ridge.
2nd Section – Burngate to Corfe Castle – approx 5 miles / 8km.
The terrain is mainly gently descending, however there is some uphill around Afflington Farm to the Purbeck Way, before descending again towards Corfe Castle.
